Next meeting – 11th February 2013

January 31, 2013 Comments off

Time to get to grips with this month’s new song from the good folks at Ukulele Underground, which is I Saw The Light from Todd Rundgren. Links are on the Homework page.  Peter has diligently done the paperwork and will bring it along (round of appreciative applause).

Hi all

Zoe here,  my first post – whoop whoop

Festival season is on it’s way,  I just got sent an email to a little one day uke festival that is being organised and thought I’d pass it on to anyone who is interested.  I can’t go as that weekend I’ll be celebrating my body ageing faster than my mind.

Show us your talents and share your skills

January 20, 2010 2 comments

At the last couple of ukearists we have experimented with setting aside part of the night to individual performances and for folk to teach the rest of us something new on the uke.  This has worked out really well so I reckon we should make it a regular feature at the Ukearist, it certainly adds a bit of variety to the night.

So far we have had performances from myself, Dave and Steven and Chris has taught chunking and 12 bar blues and did a bit about the blues scale for improvising.

I suggest that at around 9pm each night whoever fancies doing a performance or bit of teaching can do so.

This will be a really great for giving any of you interested in performing a friendly and low-pressure environment to do it in and will be really interesting for the rest of us to see what sort of things folk play outside of the ukearist.  I’m also really looking forward to learning new skills from the rest of you.

If you have any other suggestions or comments please share them below.

Hi everyone.

This week at Ukearist we looked briefly at the technique for chunking. Click on the following link to view a video tutorial focussing on just that:

I use chunking all the time and really enjoy the way that it adds rythym to my playing. As well as a tutorial for chunking there’s a whole load of other useful ‘how to’ videos on there so check them out and have some fun.

Personally, I learn more from watching tutorials than I do from books or just messing around. For youtube we are truly blessed!

Ode To Joy

October 6, 2009 2 comments

At the last ukearist we talked about playing the multi-parted Ode To Joy as performed by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain at the proms this year:

You can play either:

Click on the links above for the chords/tab to print off, I will also have copies with me.  There’s some lessons about how to play the song from the UOGB too.

It would be great if some/all of you could learn this before next Monday (12th October) so we can all have a bash at it together, I reckon it would be really fun to play!

Uke Singing Workshop! – this coming Monday

August 18, 2009 1 comment

Come along next Monday, 24 August.

Bring your uke! Bring your voice!

Take part in the first ever Ukearist Ukulele Singing Workshop.

The fabulous Penny Stone will be at the Mackenzie School of English to guide the warbling and enjoy our strumming. Penny is an experienced music teacher and workshop leader, keen to help us explore our sound-making potential.

Whether you’re a Bing Crosby wannabe or an aspiring rock god (or goddess), come along and find your remarkable voice!

Strumming is from 7, with singing from 7.30 to 9.30. (Post-singing strumming optional.)

Cost will be reasonable – the more warblers who attend, the lower the rate slides down the (musical) scale. (We’re hoping to make it around the £5 mark.)

As Penny would say, “Get in!”

Anyone interested in a singing workshop?

August 7, 2009 2 comments

Margaret has a friend who is a singing teacher and a few of us have expressed an interest in getting her in to do a group singing workshop outwith the ukearist nights. Before we confirm or arrange anything we’d like to gauge how much interest there might be in these. There would be a cost but I expect it to be fairly minimal if there’s enough of us.

If you could send me an email or reply to this post if you’re interested in the workshop and we’ll take it from there.

For the record my name will be the first on the list if we do go ahead with the workshop, probably much to the delight of some of you!
