Next Ukearist on 2nd Feb

January 29, 2009 2 comments

Just to remind you all that the next ukearist get-together is on Monday 2nd February at Mackenzie School of English.  All future ukearist dates can be found on the calendar page, this is the place to look if you’re not sure if ukearist is on in a particular week

For around the first hour from 7 till 8 we will be concentrating on teaching less experienced players, so if you want to learn, that’s the time to come!  It would be great to see some of the more experienced players along at this time too to help out with the teaching!

From 8 till 10 we will be jamming together playing various songs, our current song list look something like this (grouped by chords used):

C, C7, F

C, C7, F, G7

C, F, G

  • 500 Miles
  • Red Red Wine
  • Down on the Corner

C, C7, F, G7, G, Am

  • All along the Watchtower
  • Like a Prayer
  • Blowin’ in the Wind

C, C7, F, G7, G, Am, Dm

  • Faith
  • YMCA

C, C7, F, G7, G, Am, D

  • Steal My Kisses
  • Sorrow
  • Don’t Panic (Dsus2)

C, C7, F, G7, G, Am, D, D7

  • Hey Jude

C, F, G, Am, Em

  • Have you Ever Seen the Rain
  • Yellow

If you have other songs that you would like to play at Monday Ukearist then please feel free to print off 15 copies or so and bring them along.  Initially I think it is best to stick to songs with the easier chords so that less experienced ukers don’t get too left behind.

Wishing you all a great weekend, hope to see many of you this Monday, uke on!

The first ukearist get-together

January 20, 2009 1 comment

Well I think we can say that the very first Edinburgh Ukearist gathering was a qualified success!  We had a fantastic turn-out with a total of 13 jolly ukers and a good mix between beginners and more experienced players.  We started out with a bit of tuition for the beginners and soon had them rolling with their first few chords and we went straight into the Beatles’ ‘Get Back’.  In just 45 minutes absolute beginners were able to play a popular Beatles song on the uke – amazing!  We had some Pringles too (thanks James!), I think that helped.

After that the more experienced ukers paired up with the beginners for a bit of one to one tuition and then we all got back together and bashed through these songs together:

  • You are My Sunshine
  • Sloop John B
  • In the Summertime
  • 500 miles
  • Blowin in the wind
  • Like a prayer

They were chosen as the chords are simple with each song adding just one new chord to those that had already been taught.

I think it was the first time that most of us had played ukes together in a large group before, I found it to be really enjoyable and it was pleasing to hear that we sounded tighter and more coherent towards the end of the evening.

After that all that was left to do was pop down Sofi’s in Leith for pint!  It’s a lovely little bar, I can see it becoming a regular post-Ukearist watering hole.

Thanks to Chris for providing such a great venue and to Shane for his help with the organisation and not forgetting Debs, Margaret, James, Michelle, Steven, Alastair, Anja, Kate, Andy and Katrina for coming along and making the night such fun!

Roll on 2nd February and Ukearist part 2….

Ukulele open mic this Thursday

That’s right kids, Edinburgh has its very own ukulele open mic night!  It’s called Uke Boogie and is on at the Bowery on Roxburgh Place this Thursday (22nd Jan) from 8.30 to 11.30.  It’s hosted by Pockets of kazokeylele fame.

It’s going to be a regular thing so plently more chances to whip your uke out in public if you can’t make this one.

2009 is the year of ukes in Edinburgh, you heard it here first!
