Beginners’ Night 30th January

While new folk are always welcome at the Ukearist, for the next meeting we will be hosting a special beginners’ night packed with hints, tips and easy songs for those who are just starting out on the great ukulele journey. Our meetings are fun, friendly and free from intimidation, with people of all ages from absolute beginners to seasoned players. So if Santa brought a uke and you’re yearning to be learning, come along and be astounded by how much you can pick up in just one evening!

Refreshments at the Ukearist

The Christmas party was a great success, and thanks to everyone who came along for making it so. Following on from that and after some discussion with those present at the last meeting, it’s been agreed that playing the uke is thirsty work and liquid refreshments are in order at future meetings. Therefore please feel free to bring along something to drink by way of soft drinks, coffee/tea, beer or wine etc (but no spirits). There are disposable cups available if needed.

Uke Boogie open mic night

There’s a Uke Boogie open mic night at Banshee Labyrinth, Niddry Street, tonight at 8.00 p.m. Find out more here. Thanks to Alastair for the info. Unfortunately I can’t (or shouldn’t) be there as the Common Cold Fairy has been to visit. For those who are interested, perhaps we can make some firm arrangements to be at the next one. Christmas Ukearist – 19th December

The next meeting is the last before Christmas and the last one of the year, so the plan is for everybody to bring a small contribution of drinks and nibbles and make a party of it. There is a good Christmas song book to be found here. Please print out the PDF if you can as I don’t think we have any spares. Also if anybody has a music stand they can bring, it would very likely come in useful. It would be helpful to have an idea of numbers, so please confirm if you are intending to come along. And don’t forget your Santa hat!

The Mighty Uke

Thanks to Emma at the Cameo Cinema for getting in touch to confirm this unmissable ukulele event in Edinburgh. Details of the show can be found at the Cameo website here and you can find out more about the film at the Mighty Uke. As well as the film there will be a performance by James Hill and a strum-along session too. I know one or two folk are interested in us going as a group which would be great, especially for the strum-along.

The Mighty Uke is coming to Edinburgh

Seize the chance to see this documentary film at the Cameo on Saturday 10th December, along with a not-to-be-missed performance by uke virtuoso James Hill. Some other venues are already sold out, so why not get the run-up to Christmas off to a ukeing good start and get your tickets now.

Ukes at the fringe

Uke Hunt has a run-down of some of the top acts at this year’s fringe. I saw Tricity Vogue’s cabaret last year with some fellow Ukearistas featuring both Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer and Helen Amey and can highly recommend all three.

They’re playing at the Queens Hall in Edinburgh at 8 pm on Friday, 29 April. What better way to cap off an inspiring (?) day?

Tickets are £18 (no concessions, boo!)

Farewell to John!

Hi everyone

As you should all be aware, this coming Monday (28th March) is John’s last session with Ukearist. As John was the original founder of the Ukearist, and has done so much to keep it going over the years, he will be greatly missed – so let’s make sure he gets a great sendoff!!

The plan (subject to booking) is to have our usual play for an hour or so this Monday, and then to take the ukes over to Sofi’s pub for about half 8, after which we can have a few drinks and knock out some of our favourite tunes. Given the occasion it would be nice if we could spice it up a little with some added percussion, harmonicas, KAZOOS etc – just bring along whatever you can and we’ll be sure to make a good night of it. Obviously the more people that can come along, the better! – true for every week but particularly for this one.
